What is Google Postmaster Tools and why is it important to us?

Postmaster Tools #

Postmaster Tools is a free tool from Google that we use at Dissau to make sure our emails reach the inboxes of our clients who use Gmail (that is, emails ending in @gmail.com).

Why do we need this? #

Because no one likes it when important emails end up in the spam folder. With Postmaster Tools, we can:

  • See if Gmail trusts our emails
  • Check if any clients marked them as spam
  • Identify any delivery errors
  • Confirm we’re following best practices when sending emails

What do we see in Postmaster Tools? #

Once everything is set up, we can view charts such as:

  • How many emails we send each day
  • How many go to spam
  • What reputation our domain has
  • If there were any issues with email authentication (verification)

What do I need to do? #

Nothing technical. You just need to know:

  • Everything is already configured by our technical team
  • If a client says “I didn’t receive the email” or “It went to spam,” you can notify the support team so they can check it in Postmaster Tools
  • If you notice several important emails are going to spam, report that too

What does Postmaster Tools need to work? #

In order to display data, the system needs:

  • That we’re sending a sufficient volume of emails to Gmail accounts
  • That our DNS settings are correctly configured (our technical team already handled this)
  • One or two days to pass since we began sending emails

Where do the reports go? #

The reports generated by Google are sent daily to our company and are reviewed by our IT team.

In summary #

Google Postmaster Tools is like a thermometer for the health of our emails.
It helps us improve deliverability and avoid having our messages land in spam.
