What is PHP? #
PHP (a recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a server-side programming language. Its main purpose is to generate dynamic web pages and interactive web applications.
All websites built with WordPress use PHP as the base language.
When does it make sense to change the PHP version? #
Like WordPress, PHP is constantly evolving, receiving performance improvements, new features, and security patches. Therefore, updating your version may be necessary or beneficial in the following situations:
- WordPress requires a newer version of PHP to function properly.
- The current version of PHP is outdated and poses a security risk.
- A new version of PHP has been released that offers performance or stability improvements that you want to take advantage of.
Which PHP version should you use? #
In most cases, it’s best to use the version suggested by your hosting provider. If you don’t have a specific reason to use a different version, always follow the system’s recommendation.
For DISSAU (and other leading providers), the currently recommended version is PHP 8.3.
Advantages of using the latest stable version: #
- Better loading and launch performance.
- Greater compatibility with modern WordPress plugins and themes.
- Built-in security improvements.
- Active support and guaranteed updates.
